  9. The most critical part of a Shuttle mission begins when it├òs time to come home. The Orbiter must be slowed and manoeuvred into the right position so that it enters the Earth├òs atmosphere at the correct angle. If the ship begins re-entry at the wrong angle, there is the danger it might burn up or bounce off the atmosphere.

  11. Even when it enters the atmosphere at the correct level, the Orbiter experiences intense heat. The thermal protection system (TPS) protects the Orbiter from the cold vacuum of space as well as the intense heat of entry into the Earth├òs atmosphere.
